GABY JONNA

Born in The Hague, the Netherlands, and currently living between London and New York, Gaby Jonna’s practice moves between sculpture, painting and movement.

The body is often where her work begins. Growing up,

movement was a natural part of family life, while resilience was shaped by the people closest to her and the many different ways she witnessed people navigate life within their bodies through illness, disability, loss and social expectations.

These experiences continue to inform her practice: how we care for one another, and how much can be communicated through touch, listening or simply witnessing.

Creating has always been Gaby’s way of finding her place in the world. From traces discovered in nature to objects connected to feelings she could not yet name, making became a way of creating spaces in which she could feel safe.

During a period of physical illness, her relationship with her practice shifted. Rather than searching for answers, making became a space to listen, allowing something new to emerge.

In many ways, art became a place of return and transformation.

Gaby believes we experience many rebirths throughout our lives. That we continuously adapt, rediscover and transform.

We are constantly becoming.

THE CURATOR’S EYE

There is something beautifully instinctive about the way Gaby moves between body, material and emotion. Her work can feel playful and whimsical, yet underneath sits something deeply human: resilience, vulnerability and our capacity to transform.

It was through our conversations that the idea of REBIRTH began to take shape for me.

What happens when we don't simply look at art, but allow ourselves to experience it? Can an exhibition shift our energy, challenge a thought, or reconnect us with something within ourselves?

This October, 1108B takes REBIRTH from the online atelier into a physical experience in London.

Together with Gaby, we are creating more than an exhibition. REBIRTH invites you to become part of the experience; bringing together art, movement, sound and energy through Gaby’s multidisciplinary practice.

A moment to look outward, but perhaps more importantly, to turn inward.
