‘REBIRTH’

The Art of Becoming

On 8 October, 1108B welcomed guests into the world of REBIRTH · Between Body and Matter, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Gaby Jonna, presented in collaboration with DSQube, the cultural programming platform at London's Devonshire Square.

What began as an exploration of the body, nature and transformation became an evening of shared presence. Artists, art lovers and curious minds gathered not simply to view an exhibition, but to experience it.

An especially meaningful moment for 1108B. The atelier's first offline curated journey unfolded in London, B's second beloved home, where art, people and stories came together beyond the digital space.

A moment of surrender.

When the body becomes the artwork

At the centre of the vernissage was a live performance by Gaby Jonna, accompanied by the sound and breath work of Ambar Surastri and a sensory tea ritual by Still & Shift, inviting guests into a moment of stillness and connection.

Moving among her paintings and sculptures, Gaby invited the audience to witness the body as something more than a physical form. A vessel of memory, resilience, vulnerability and constant change.

There was no need to understand every gesture. The invitation was simply to be present.

The performance blurred the boundaries between artist, artwork and observer, allowing movement, sound and material to speak a language of their own.

The stories held within matter

Beyond the performance, REBIRTH unfolds through Gaby's paintings and sculptural works.

Deep blues emerge from darker surfaces. Organic shapes appear and dissolve. Materials carry traces of movement, memory and time.

Her practice asks us to consider the parallels between the human body and the natural world. Both are shaped by their surroundings. Both absorb, resist, release and transform.

And neither remains quite the same.

The artworks offer a different rhythm from the opening performance. They ask for time, curiosity and a willingness to look a little closer.

For those discovering Gaby's work for the first time, the exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter her artistic language in person. Selected works are also available to collect, with enquiries welcomed through 1108B.

More than an exhibition

The vernissage was also a celebration of coming together.

From the shared experience of the performance to the conversations that followed, the evening reflected what 1108B hopes to bring into the world: a more personal, accessible and immersive relationship with contemporary art.

Our collaboration with DSQube, whose cultural programming brings contemporary art and creative experiences into Devonshire Square, reflects a shared belief in making art part of the city's everyday cultural life.

A big thank you to our drinks partner Gin 1689 for a nice linger throughout the evening.

And, of course, to everyone who stepped into the space with an open mind.

One last moment to experience REBIRTH

If you missed the opening, the story is not over.

On Thursday, 29 October, REBIRTH returns to movement with a final live performance by Gaby Jonna, accompanied by Ambar Surastri.

The finissage offers one last opportunity to experience the exhibition as it was conceived: where body, matter, movement and sound meet.

Whether you're an art lover, a curious explorer or a collector looking to discover a new voice, we'd love to welcome you.
